Submission Guidelines

Formats and Word Counts

Poetry: We like poems that are heartfelt and honest. A sequence of short poems linked by a common theme would be accepted as well. Under 500 words or 40 lines.

Short fiction: 500-2,000 words.

Memoir: An interesting, 100%-true episode from your life. The emphasis is on episode, as distinct from a whole life story. If you are submitting in this category, please plainly indicate that the item is a memoir and not fiction. 1,000-2,000 words.

Essays: A short essay on some topic you've given thought to. 500-2,000 words.

Art: We love illustrations, photos, and comics, but feel free to expand our horizons.

Submission Periods

Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis. We publish four times a year around the start of each season, so if the current season's edition is full, newly accepted pieces will roll over into the next season's publication.

Reprints and Simultaneous Submissions

Reprints are not allowed. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis for personal websites but must be disclosed during time of submission.

Simultaneous submissions are allowed. They must be disclosed at the time of submission and pieces should be rescinded when they have been accepted by another publication. You may do this by editing your initial submission form response or by emailing spadinaliteraryreview@gmail.com.

Payment

The Spadina Literary Review is a labour of love and remains free to read and free to submit to. As such, we don't pay for submissions and rely on the generosity of our contributors.

Response Times

We try to respond to every submission within 2 months, but we currently have a backlog, so please bear with us as responses may be slower.

Submission Form

The form is our preferred method, but if it isn't working, you may email your submissions to spadinaliteraryreview@gmail.com with your name, biography, and the title of the piece.
